Are Window Security Grilles Worth It?

11/02/2020

Although grilles add more protection, many homeowners worry about how the grilles will break up the view (especially if you see the harbour, ocean or vast green space outside). As a result, they decide against the grilles in favour of a more pleasant view.

However, it could be a mistake because of safety concerns. After all, grilles discourage burglars and criminals. They will be looking for another entry point they can exploit (which is why you should also have a strong security door both in front and at the back of your house). And even if they attempt to enter, the grilles will be strong enough to delay or stop them.

Another reason to have the grilles is to prevent your child from falling off the window. Children are always curious on what’s outside and they might attempt to get out. If there were no grilles in place, there’s that chance of falling and getting injured. It also happens with pets where perhaps they want to go outside and play but there’s no stopping them. Pets of neighbours as well as other animals coming from the outside might find an entrance through the windows. The screens might already be enough to stop them but for your added peace of mind, grilles should be installed.

Many homeowners also choose to have the grilles because of how they protect the windows from flying debris and branches in case of a storm. When a big tree branch flies directly to the window, expect costly repairs and hassles not just on the broken window but also the potential damages inside your home (maybe the branch hit an appliance or furniture).

What about aesthetics? Diamond grilles can actually add beauty to a home and complement its exterior and interior design. Whether your home is of a modern or contemporary look, diamond grilles have that timeless appeal that go along with most home and window designs. A lot of natural light and breeze will still come in which can help illuminate and freshen your home’s interior.

In summary, the priority is on safety (and aesthetics is only secondary) for many homeowners. It’s especially the case if there are threats and reported incidences in their neighbourhood. Although there are still tradeoffs (e.g. the grilles will indeed break up the view), it’s still worth thinking about how the grilles will make you feel safer.
